Until a new U.S. Ambassador arrives to succeed Peter Haas, former diplomat Tracy Ann Jacobson will take on the role in Dhaka.

Jacobson‍‍`s primary responsibility will be managing the interim period, focusing on Bangladesh’s reform process and democratic transition.

She is expected to assume her duties in Dhaka next week, pending final arrangements.

President Joe Biden had previously nominated David Meale to succeed Peter Haas as the U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh.

However, until Meale takes office, Jacobson will serve as the Charge d’Affaires (CDA).

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this appointment through a diplomatic letter.

Ahead of her arrival, Jacobson held a meeting on Wednesday, January 8, in Washington with Bangladesh’s Ambassador to the U.S., Asad Alam Siam, to discuss the current situation in Bangladesh.

Jacobson, a seasoned diplomat with a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, has previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kosovo.

Her diplomatic career also includes postings in U.S. embassies in Russia, Ethiopia, South Korea, and Latvia.

Before retiring from the diplomatic service in 2017, she held the position of Deputy Executive Secretary at the U.S. National Security Council.
